G20 Energy Efficiency Investment Toolkit

  • G20 Energy Efficiency Investment Toolkit:

    Peter Sweatman, Rapporteur

Launched in May 2017, the G20 Energy Efficiency Investment Toolkit is the result of the collaboration between 15 participating country members of the G20’s Energy Efficiency Finance Task Group (EEFTG), which is co-chaired and coordinated by France and Mexico.

G20 Leadership from the world’s 20 leading economies asserts that energy efficiency is a long-term priority, and therefore it is necessary to double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, as well as to better understand and help fill the annual energy efficiency investment gap.

This Toolkit provides a new perspective on the challenge of scaling-up energy efficiency investments as it defines and separates:

  • “Core” energy efficiency investments: those stand-alone projects where the delivery of energy savings is the lead driver.
  • “Integral” energy efficiency investments: where overall asset performance is the lead driver, yet multiple benefits -including improved energy performance- are delivered by an incremental “embedded” investment.

Also, the toolkit relies on the Voluntary Energy Efficiency Investment Principles to compare and provide a clear assessment of national policy developments, highlighting best practices, and to evaluate the distinct policy tracking databases.

In addition, the Toolkit explains the way public and private sector financial institutions are addressing the energy efficiency investment challenge in terms of their commitments, approaches, tools, and how they share those areas for further joint development.
